There's Ozempic in the Break Room

One in eight American adults is currently taking a GLP-1 drug like Ozempic or Wegovy.1 Prescriptions have more than tripled since 2020.2 It’s the fastest cultural shift in modern medicine, and it’s easy to see the pull. The promise is irresistible: the result without the grind. Shrink the thing you don’t like without touching the life that made it.

No judgment on anyone who takes one. The drug isn’t the story. The appetite is. The collective, national craving for a shot that skips the hard part. Because that same craving just walked into your office, clipped on a lanyard, and started running the company.

Companies found their Ozempic. They call it AI.

Watch what’s actually happening. AI-related layoffs went from about 18,000 in 2024 to more than 100,000 in 2025, and the first half of 2026 alone already passed 150,000.3 Here’s the part nobody says at the all-hands: most of it isn’t working. An MIT study found 95% of corporate generative-AI pilots produced no measurable return.4 Companies poured hundreds of billions into the technology and cut the jobs anyway, whether or not it delivered. The jab came first. The results were optional.

That’s not a transformation. That’s a company looking in the mirror, deciding it looks bloated, and reaching for the needle.

The bloat was never the headcount.

Here’s what the shot doesn’t fix. The reason your work feels heavy isn’t that there are too many people. It’s that the work itself is swollen with everything that isn’t the work. Knowledge workers spend around 60% of the day on “work about work,” the pinging and chasing and status-hunting that surrounds the job instead of being it.5 Microsoft’s 2025 research clocked employees getting interrupted every 2 minutes, up to 275 times a day, with 80% saying they don’t have the time or energy to do their job well.6

Then AI arrives to “help,” and the swelling gets worse. The Harvard Business Review said it flat out: AI doesn’t reduce work, it intensifies it.7 The tools make more feel doable, so more gets piled on, and 45% of the heaviest AI users now report burnout, against 35% of everyone else.8 You injected the office, a few names dropped off the org chart, and the people left standing are metabolizing double the load. The number on the scale went down. The disease kept eating.

What is a coordination layer, and why does it matter here?
